There is always so much coverage of disaster relief, but rebuilding and sustainable solutions rarely follow and the second wave of the disaster goes largely unreported. Hardly surprising when the journalists tend to leave after the first week has passed. The story is less interesting after a few days of coverage - it isn't surprising.
But A4A wants to help put development and rebuilding back on the agenda. We are not in the business of flying in and prescribing a solution. We work with local people, their ideals, needs and indigenous materials to find a lasting solution, wherever there is a need for better shelter.
We work with local and international NGO's and community groups. A4A maintains that the means of building is as important as the end result and A4A building projects always promote capacity building, livelihood creation and skill sharing. Donors rightly wonder whether their donations might be misdirected, appropriated or diverted. Because we fund the sharing of skills and expertise there is no danger that our resources can be mis-used or diverted. All donations reach their target, and go much further once there thanks to our project-planning and cost-managing.
A4A is working with the most admired academic experts to create the first accreditated CPD courses and lectures on humanitarian architectural issues. We create a forum to engage in the debate and question the architects' role in humanitarian building practice.
